The answer: about a thousand in the year 1938 alone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1292\">Think about that \u2013 one thousand angry Britons convinced that glowing shopfronts were scrambling their dance band music and late-night speeches.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1297\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1328\">The Minister\u2019s Problem<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1632\">Major Tryon, the Postmaster-General of the day, admitted the situation was messy. Neon signs were causing interference, but the government had <strong data-start=\"1473\" data-end=\"1491\">no legal power<\/strong> to make owners fix the problem. Most business owners fitted \u201cinterference-suppression devices\u201d voluntarily, but there was nothing binding.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1866\">The Minister promised the matter was being looked at as part of a new <em data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1730\">Wireless Telegraphy Bill<\/em>. But, he added, it was \u201ca problem of great complexity\u201d involving \u201cmany interests.\u201d Translation: <em data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1863\">everyone was blaming everyone else<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"1871\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1891\">MPs Pile On<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"2046\">Gallacher pressed him: people are paying their licence fee, but they\u2019re getting static instead of swing jazz. Shouldn\u2019t the government hurry things up?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2209\">Mr. Poole chimed in too: forget the shop signs \u2013 wasn\u2019t the Central Electricity Board itself a culprit, with their high-tension cables buzzing across the land?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2404\">Tryon ducked again, muttering that it was \u201cone of the points which makes the matter difficult.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithersofstamford.com\/blog\/neon-sign-buying-guide-light-it-up-the-right-way\/\">In other words: neon<\/a>, electricity, and radio waves were all tangled in the same crackling mess.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2406\" data-end=\"2409\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2434\">What It Tells Us<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2714\">Looking back, this dusty debate is more than just a quaint footnote. It\u2019s proof that neon signs were once such a <strong data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2584\">powerful, disruptive technology<\/strong> they literally rattled the national airwaves. It refuses to go quietly. It demands attention \u2013 whether that\u2019s in the House of Commons or in your living room.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3257\" data-end=\"3408\">So next time you hear a crackle, hum, or buzz, remember this: neon signs once stopped Britain in its tracks.
