Choosing between a Recliner Chair or a Riser Recliner

In the world of reclining armchairs there will be certain features that appeal, and it is how necessary these functions are that will determine your final choice. One of the debates that will arise is do you require a recliner or riser recliner?

The main differences are that a recliner will allow the back to be adjusted to the recline position, while also facilitating an upward movement of the footrest. If this is all that is needed, then this should be the one for you.

A riser recliner, otherwise known as a lift chair recliner, lift and rise chair or a riser chair, can be preferred if you require the chair to rise, as a whole, to lift you to the standing position. It also provides the other features of the recliner chair, namely the recline of the backrest and the lift of the footrest.

One of the main advantages then is that your riser recliner allows you to be lifted to the standing position andthen take you from the standing position into the relaxed seating position at your leisure. The lifting mechanism works by raising the seat while adjusting the back and base of the chair forward to lift you at an angle into the standing position.

Regarding the recliner chair, adjustments are made via two different ways. One is a manual delivery system which is taken care of by levers or pull handles to help you adjust to your favoured position; these are usually on the side of the chair, and the second is electrically delivered by means of a handset or buttons on the side of the chair.

Most of the recliner chairs and their single motor system allow for a fixed, single reclined position while a riser recliner offers a greater variety, made available by dual, three or four motor applications offering a greater number of reclined positions.

When it comes to cost, riser recliners are not always that much more expensive than recliner chairs. It does depend on the features that are desired by the user. Compare between the various suppliers on the brand and model that you are keen on.

Having a long-term illness or disability will enable VAT relief on the purchase of a riser recliner chair while there is no allowance for this on recliner chairs.

If your illness is preventing you from being able to get in and out of an armchair with ease, then a riser recliner is probably better. At best, they are robust and offer substantial reliability with the best guaranteed for five years.

If your disability means you need a wheelchair or walking frame in the home then a riser recliner is better, in that they can lift you into the required position to make the transfer less difficult.

If your weight is an issue, then a riser recliner is probably preferrable as their stability will prove to be a help when manoeuvring in and out of your chair. Also, it is worth considering that if you spend a lot of time in the chair then having a riser recliner made to measure will provide a precise fit, minimizing the strain on your joints, while the tilt-in-space riser recliners reduce the risk of pressure sores.

Either way a visit to the supplier’s showroom is advisable if you can make it. Only then can your preferred choices be taken care of.
