Tolix Chair Specifications
New style from our predecessor - More heavy. More robust. More quirky.
The first Tolix chair was made by designer Xavier Pauchard from (1880-1948) who was the vision of vintage industrial cage style chairs in French cafes. After World War I, he found himself (a visionary and innovation entrepreneur) in charge of a fashion manufacture of galvanised sheet-metal furniture and homeware, which at the time, embodied household comfort.
Xavier 1927 registered the trademark TOLIX, at the same time producing industrial style dining chairs, armchairs, stools. The style of chairs (rustproof, robust & stackable chairs) conceived by Xavier Pauchard established their iconic place directly inside factories, offices & hospitals, as well as embarking on-board the ship Normandie in 1935 and finding themsleves outside on French, British and American streets lined cafes. Furniture for children was also created in 1935 under the trademark of La Mouette, and by the end of the 1950’s, with the succession of his son, Jean, Tolix and it’s 80 something workers produced about 60,000 units annually. This prosperous company remained in the same family until 2004. Now in 2015 there are 1000s of replica reproductions on the market today. Smithers are your first choice Tolix, they are life time buys and will stand the test of time under the Smithers of Stamford Brand!
